Going for Gold at GHS

The Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award Scheme is always popular at GHS and over 200 girls typically take part each year across the Bronze, Silver and Gold Award levels each year. This year has seen 31 girls from the current Upper Sixth taking part in Gold expeditions for their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The GHS Gold team's expedition season began in early August with a two day training trip to the Forest of Dean, where girls were put through a challenging series of activities, including night navigation, in order to bring all their expedition skills up to Gold standard. Next there was an expedition to Dartmoor, followed by a final assessed expedition to the Brecon Beacons in October in unseasonably fine weather.

The girls and the staff organising the expedition were delighted that their positive attitude and strong teamwork was recognised by the assessor, Edward Marks, who has been assessing Duke of Edinburgh expeditions for 20 years. In summing up the successes of 25 participants from GHS, he said, “All the girls showed outstanding teamwork. I know that this is expected by the Award but all of your groups were exceptional. I can honestly say that it was the most outstanding teamwork I can remember as an assessor. It could be used as an example to other groups.”

As we move into the 2010 season of Gold Duke of Edinburgh, we are looking forward to another exciting year as 45 members of the current Lower Sixth have applied to participate in the Gold Award; an unprecedented level of involvement which includes over half of the year group and is a 45% increase on last year.

Duke of Edinburgh requires students to complete a personal programme which includes volunteering, physical activities, learning a skill, expeditions and, for the Gold Award, a residential event where students work as part of team. These experiences help girls gain confidence and resilience and they learn about becoming responsible citizens, while also having a great deal of fun!
