Joining Guildford High School

Our prospectus and this website will offer you an overview of Guildford High School but will only ever give you part of the picture so an important first step in choosing a school for your daughter is to come and visit us.  Our visitors’ mornings allow you to get a true flavour of school life to help you decide whether Guildford High School is the right school for your daughter.

Registration and Standard Entry Points

The main intake ages for Guildford High School are 4+, 7+, 11+ and 16+, although we do consider girls at other ages depending on the availability of spaces.  Families who are relocating to the area will also be considered at other times. You may register your daughter at any time prior to the deadline but, in order to take the entrance examination, the registration form needs to be returned to the Admissions Department with the registration fee (currently £100), by 1st November of the year prior to entry (i.e. November 2017 for entry in September 2018).  Girls wishing to enter Sixth Form (16+) or Reception (4+) should be registered by 1st October prior to year of entry.  Registrations for 2017 entry can no longer be accepted.  We do not give priority to early registrations; every candidate is considered on an equal basis at the point of assessment.

Entrance Assessments

Assessments for entry at 4+ (Reception) and 16+ (Sixth Form) take place in November of the year prior to entry. 7+ (Year 3) and older entrance assessments take place in the January prior to entering the school the following September with 11+ (Year 7) entrance assessments typically being the first Friday of the Lent Term.

Reception

For entry at 4+, your daughter will be seen on two separate occasions, with each visit lasting approximately one hour. The first visit assesses language, number and general cognitive skills and the second considers her manipulative and social skills in a group environment. Standardised tests are used to assess the learning potential in language development, cognition, physical skills and socialisation. Reading ability is not assessed.

Years 1 to 6 Junior School

Girls wishing to join at 5+ or 6+ (Years 1 and 2) will be assessed individually in language and number, with a written element.  For entry at 7+ (Year 3) and above girls come to school for the day to take their entrance assessment, have lunch, a tour of school and enjoy some fun activities.  For ages 7+ to 10+ the entrance examination consists of written papers in English and Mathematics.  Each girl will read to the Head or Deputy Head of Junior School, who will also interview them. Should places be available, offers of places are normally made within a fortnight of the entrance examination/assessment test.

Years 7 to 11 Senior School

For entry to the Senior School written papers are set in English and Mathematics. Each girl will also have a one to one interview on the day of the entrance examination.  All papers are designed to bring out the skills and potential of the candidates, whatever they may have covered in the past. Offers of places are normally made within a fortnight of the entrance examination/assessment test.

Sixth Form

For entry into the Sixth Form girls will be asked to sit three one hour papers from a choice of subjects.  These subjects do not have to be those which the candidate intends to take at A Level but it is sensible if they are closely related.  All candidates will also have an interview with a member of staff.   For entry to Guildford High School Sixth Form we expect at least eight GCSE passes at grades A* to C on the old system, or grade 5 or above on the new system, to include:

  1. A minimum of six A* or A grades or six grades 7 to 9
  2. A pass (A* to C or grade 5 or above) in English Language and Mathematics
  3. A* or A or grade 7 to 9 in the subjects being taken at AS Level.  Where the AS subject is not taken at GCSE, we look at the GCSE grade in a related subject (e.g. Biology GCSE for AS Psychology, History or English Literature GCSE for AS Politics). If a student fails to meet this requirement, we can discuss suitable alternative AS courses following GCSE results.

Please note that these minimum GCSE requirements for Sixth Form entry apply both to current pupils and to new applicants to Guildford High School.
